A steel pole stands outdoors for decades, exposed to rain, humidity and pollutants. Hot-dip galvanizing is the coating that keeps it from rusting away — and it's one of the most important things to check when buying poles.
What hot-dip galvanizing is
After fabrication, the finished pole is dipped in molten zinc. The zinc metallurgically bonds to the steel surface, forming a tough, uniform coating that protects it two ways: as a physical barrier, and sacrificially — the zinc corrodes in preference to the steel, protecting even small scratches.
Why "after fabrication" matters
Galvanizing the completed pole (rather than galvanized sheet that's then cut and welded) means cut edges, welds and drilled holes are all coated. That's why hot-dip galvanizing after fabrication outlasts pre-galvanized-only construction in the field.
What to check
- Standard — coating to the relevant Indian standards such as IS 2629 and IS 4759
- Coating thickness / mass — specified in microns or g/m²; more zinc means longer life
- Uniformity and finish — no bare patches, smooth adhesion
